Euthanasia today in west has become a debatable issue, where laws are added to the constitution either in favour or against it. Its quite a controversial issue because it involves conflicting human rights as well as religious belief. The word is greek originated Eu: Good/Happy Thanatos: death, thus implying happy death.
The American Medical Association's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs defines Euthanasia as act of bringing death to a hopelessly ill and suffering person in relative quick and painless way for reason of mercy. They are again classified as Voluntary and Involuntary Euthanasia.
In Voluntary, the person gives the content for him being killed, where the consent is given in writing or verbal dictum. In involuntary euthanasia basically involves physician assisted suicide.
In age of modern scientific revolution, our thinking has undergone such radical change, we feel we have mastered things around us, and in things where we fail, we justify our stand by having rules and law in favour of our ego enhancement. And clearly i sense euthanasia is one such issue that has to be tackled more efficiently.
Euthanasia will destroy the societal respect for life. With advancement in medicine the society will become insensitive to death, and LIFE will no longer be valued. This will surely degrade the social fabric and lead to various other socital ills. Euthanasia becoming legal will surely result in misuse and abuse at the hands of life sustainers. Once the society accepts life can be terminated because of its diminshed quality, it will be biggest setback to human thought process. As this will surely bring out the animal traits that we have carried out during our evolution. There might be many rational answer favouring euthanasia, like suffering faced by patients, cost of life support system to which patient is adminstered, etc etc....
I would like to bring out my personal experience, it was my grandmother who was paralytic suffered stroke and went into coma, and was put into life support system, with no gurantee of life recovery. We decided to get her back to home, where she lived like a living corpse amidst us for entire week, with no sign of life except breathing. Never did we feel that she should be euthanised(by the way in India euthanasia is crime). We all feel the moment an individual is born his death to is decided. And it will always be good if we avoid being instrumental in other death.
My personal opinion is against the practice of euthanasia. I feel this issues has to be morally dealt rather than logical and scientifically.
